Fire Permits

Remember that Fire Season is all year long.  Residents of the County of Athabasca who do not reside in the Forest Protection area are required to obtain fire permits from the County before any burning takes place.

The Forest Protection area includes Township 68 and all the land to the north, as well as the land on the western edge of the County. Residents in those areas should contact the Alberta Forest Service regarding Fire Permit issuance at (780) 675-8168.

A Fire Permit is required for all outdoor fires including burn barrels but excluding an attended outdoor camp fire.

As a landowner, you may be financially liable for all costs to extinguish a wild fire which starts on your land.

Fire Permits for the County area may be applied for by calling:

  • Athabasca (County Office) (780) 675-2273

  • Grassland (John Pysyk) (780) 525-3794

A fire guardian may do a site inspection to ensure adequate safety conditions exist prior to issuing a Fire Permit.

Contact the County of Athabasca for more information on making your home and property Fire Smart.
